Life is about Constant Learning.

I have come to learn that we should be grateful for everything that happens to us in our lives. Well, at least most things are things we should be grateful for except for severe personal losses. It is through this gratitude that we learn that for everything that happens, there is always a reason behind that event. I did not always think like this. But now that I have gotten older, I realize the full power of gratitude and how it can help us to become better people.

The first reason that I believe that we should be grateful for what happens to us is because at the most basic level this is part of life. In life, there are always going to be gains and losses as well as ups and downs. It is through these occurrences that we experience life on both levels. If there were only good things happening to us in our lives, our lives would be perfect. But perfection as we know it does not exist on this Earth. One of the main things that life has taught me is that in life, there is never fairness. Fairness is only an ideal situation. It is often said that experience is the greatest teacher. So when we live on this Earth, we have different experiences. And these experiences determine who we areas individuals in terms of our skills, abilities and talents.

The next reason that I believe that we should be grateful for what happens to us is that there is a lesson behind each event. This is true regardless of whether that event happening is a good or a bad event. If you think like the author Eckhart Tolle and you have read his best selling book titled The Power of Now, then you will think differently. You will realize that on a deeper level, there can be no good or bad in your life anymore if you are truly present and going with the flow of life. But that is a different topic that is beyond the scope of this article.

For example, let us suppose that you have just lost your job that you were working at for five, ten or maybe fifteen years. You may have lost your job because the office or company shut down. Or you might have lost your job through company restructuring. Whatever the case may be for your job loss, there is always a lesson behind it. The lesson may be that it was the time for that thing to occur. The loss of your job may mean that you now have an opportunity to find an even better job than the one you had previously. Although I must admit that finding another job is really tough with the way the economy in this country now.

Another reason to be grateful for what happens to us is that whatever happens to us, our situation is still going to be better than millions of other people around the world. There are always going to be people that are poorer than us or less fortunate than us in some way. If you had a warm meal tonight at the dinner table with your family or loved one, consider yourself very fortunate and grateful. There are so many people in the world who no longer have their parents because their parents passed away when they were young. There are millions of people around the world with not enough food to eat. They are starving and living under very harsh conditions.

You are well ahead of these people because you had a chance to have a warm meal tonight. You are also ahead of many other people in the world if you have access to running water that is clean and electricity. If you have good or great health, you are still further ahead of many millions of people. I have to admit it wasn’t always this easy for me to think these kinds of thoughts.

You are also more than likely wealthier than many others in the world. Some time ago I discovered a web site called www.globalrichlist.com. On this web site, you will see a drop down menu where you can choose the currency you want to display. And then, there is a box where you can type in you yearly salary. Once you type in your salary, you will be amazed by how rich you really are in comparison to the world population. For example, if you only make about $10,000 a year in US dollars, that salary makes you very rich. Although in the United States in the traditional sense, someone earning that much money before taxes would be considered poor. But not according to the web site mentioned above. That web site shows your true wealth. I guarantee that you will feel much better about your personal situation and you will be very amazed by it. That is what happened to me and I feel so absolutely wealthy. I truly believe I can afford whatever I want to purchase. Wealth is very relative. Someone earning a salary of $100,000 a year may consider themselves rich. And a person who is truly rich may not be happy. In fact, we hear so often of many wealthy people being unhappy. You don’t necessarily need to have millions of dollars to be rich. But that would be very nice to have.

And one more reason that I believe that humans should be grateful for what happens to them is that each event teaches us something about life. This goes back to what I mentioned earlier about there being a lesson behind each event. These events may be a signal for us to try and improve a certain aspect of our lives. Or an event which happens to us may be a signal to us that we are on the right track and that we should keep on going in that direction.

I realize that there are many people right now in the world that are struggling financially or losing their homes and it is tough. These are considered to be the hardest economic times since the Great Depression. But nothing lasts forever. There are cycles even in the economy. It is often said that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. If you are struggling right now, remember that these times are temporary and with a positive attitude you will emerge as a stronger person. This is the way that I believe also. In life, things are always constantly changing. And with these changing times we have to realize that life is not always a bed of roses. But I can tell you that gratitude applied on a daily or consistent basis will produce great results in your life. This is true even in the short term. I can say that because that has happened in my life.

This is just a short list of the reasons why I believe that we should be grateful for what happens in our lives. If I think of any more reasons I will add to this list. I can also consider writing more articles on this subject of gratitude. Just remember that the Universe is there to bless you although it may not seem that way sometimes. I pray for world peace and I always try to treat others with kindness, love and respect.

  1. This is tough. I’m not pointing fingers at you though, personally I think that its those that aren’t motivated to change.
